WORKSHOP!!

“To Inner Space…..”

Second in a series of workshops supporting the Words & Images theme
presented by Donna and Karen
ARTS Center West, Montgomery Complex

Watch for spring workshops on “inner space and all spaces in between”!

Introduction to ORFF Instruments
Two Sessions!

Designed for teachers in grades 2-8 with limited or no experience with Orff instruments. No music reading ability is required.  Teachers may come to either session or to both sessions, as each session will be different.

The sessions include:  becoming familiar with the names and characteristics of the instruments, care of the instruments, mallet technique, and playing technique.  Participants will also learn to combine rhythmic and melodic patterns to form accompaniments to songs and recorder playing.  They will also explore the instruments for their coloristic possibilities for providing sound effects and other enhancements for stories and poetry.    (The ARTS center has Orff instruments for checkout.)

These workshops are over, but can be shown again - just ask!

Donna suggests--- A Rhythmic Math Game for Gr. 3-5

Students are seated in a circle.  As they say the chant, they each take turns with the phrases.  If a student misses, he goes to the center of the circle and the chant starts again.

Accompany the chant with a patch-(pat knees) clap, snap snap rhythm. Speak on the snaps.   Emphasize keeping a steady beat.

 Chant:

 PATCH,
(pat knees)
CLAP SNAP  SNAP

First student:     1 Frog
    2 Eyes
    4 Legs
    in a Puddle
    Ker Plunk

Next Student   2 Frogs
    4 Eyes
    8 Legs
    in a Puddle
    in a Puddle
    Ker Plunk
    Ker Plunk

Continue going round the circle, multiplying, making sure you say as many “in a puddles” and  “kerplunks” as there are frogs

THE FLUTE PLAYERS

Theirs is the sound of wood
whispering Creator’s breath
through branches hollowed
with sacred instruction

Theirs is the sound of breezes
dancing timeless songs
of passionate hearts
in circles around the Earth

Theirs is the sound of birds
sending meadow voices
on feathered wings
to all directions

Theirs is the sound of echoes
shaping red rock walls
in long canyon spaces
that remember forever.

This beautiful poem makes a beautiful choral reading.  You may enhance it with movement and Native American flute in the background. A good CD for this is Quiet Heart, Spirit Wind, by Richard Warner.   Another good one is Canyon Trilogy by R. Carlos Nakai.  Both are available at the ARTS Center.
