Barbara Embery

Laura Perea and Barbara Embery share the excitement of the Americana book.

Barbara Embery, a teacher of B Level Gifted Students at Chelwood Elementary

Barbara, a teacher for 22 years, enjoys using art, music and literature to enhance an integrated study of one topic that may last all year.  Becci Perea, a mom at Chelwood Elementary says "We always hear about the 'one teacher' who made a difference in our life. Barbara Embery will be the teacher most remembered by me and my kids. She loves each of her students individually and truly cares about what they are about. She wasn't a teacher in my elementary education but she sure has been a great teacher in my adult education!"

Barbara is an enthusiastic patron of the ARTS Center and uses its resources to help pull together the arts part of her curriculum.  This year Barbara spent the month of June gathering resources for this year’s “America” unit.  As a project, students will create their own state, design symbols and identify other things that give their state identity.  In preparation for this, the students explore the lives of famous American authors, musicians, artists, mathematicians, inventors, and scientists.  They will study the history of the flag, Uncle Sam, the Pledge of Allegiance, and The Star Spangled Banner and will look at and discuss American folk tales and heroes, mottoes, holidays,  and nicknames.

Barbara makes extensive use of community resources and mentors who share their expertise with her students.  The President of Albuquerque’s Dulcimer Club will teach the students to play dulcimers, an American folk instrument,  and cloggers from the Clogging Club will teach the students to clog.
