Links for Poetry ExperiencesThe ARTS Center staff has also discovered these links which you might find useful in your study of poetry writing. Please help others by submitting links you have discovered for inclusion in our list! Online Poetry Classroom (OPC), a new program of The Academy of American poetry. OPC employs technology to encourage the development of new poetry curricula and teaching strategies by high school English and Language Arts teachers. The site includes curriculum units and lesson plans. Poetry Lesson Plans - The Favorite Poem Project seeks to improve poetry's place in the American classrooms by encouraging active, engaging poetry lessons that emphasize a direct, vocal connection to poems. Many of the lessons on this website were developed by teachers who attended the Favorite Poem Project poetry institutes hosted at Boston University in July 2001 and 2002. Some of the lessons have been provided by teachers of various grades who've emailed us about successes they've had in getting students interested in poetry and eager to learn more. In keeping with the goals of the Favorite Poem Project, the lessons presented here focus on appreciating poetry — reading, discussing, and enjoying poems — rather than on the writing of original poetry. Several of the lessons emphasize the pleasure in the words and sounds of poems as place to begin — reminding students that poetry is art, and that it is satisfying and exciting to discover a poem that enthralls you and to say it in your own voice. If poetry is presented first in classrooms as something to seek out and enjoy, rather than something to pick apart, label and decipher, students are more likely to become interested in developing a deeper understanding of meaning in poems, in looking more closely at forms, in learning the tools poets use and the terms that identify those tools. www.kristinegeorge.com As an author of children's poetry, Kristine George is often not sure what delights her more - writing poetry or sharing her love of poetry. That might be why this site has mushroomed over the years to incorporate information about her published work as well as resources she hopes you'll find helpful for teaching, writing, sharing, and enjoying children's poetry. This site will lead you to many useful links, including: Celebrate Poetry, Poetry Power, Tips for Young Poets, and The Power of Poetry. Poetry 180, a Poem a Day for American High Schools. The new Poetry 180 program from the Library and Poet Laureate Billy Collins is designed to make it easy for students to hear or read a poem each day of the 180 days of the school year. Also: see and hear Billy Collins read from his work.
