The ARTS Center "Spotlight"
Diane
Buster
teaches drama and stagecraft at Sandia HS. She has a background in
English, art, and drama which lends a unique approach to her perspective and her
teaching. "There are so many ways to combine visual arts and language -
which is really word art," she says, "I heard a quote once that 'art
is communication through form' and that is the basis of my teaching. I see
language, image, dance, music, and drama as elements of the same thing; methods
to communicate ideas, insights, and inspiration. I think students get
excited when they make the connections for themselves."
Diane
is also a painter whose work focuses on landscape and her impressions of New
Mexico. The ARTS Center has several of her prints and her work is shown
exclusively at the Southwest Cornerhouse Art Gallery and Frame Shop, 2935-C
Louisiana Blvd NE, Phone 881-7771. Chamisa, shown at the right, is one of
the prints available for loan from the ARTS Center.

Heirlooms
Is a local Celtic/folk band that is beginning it's sixth year of performing for
New Mexico audiences. The special blend of tunes played by the group
includes ancient Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English melodies, as well as the
Appalachian mountain music that grew from the Celtic traditions. The band
also enjoys adding innovative, cutting edge kinds of music being recorded by the
world's top Celtic performers.
Shane and Jeanne Page, who started Heirlooms, are owners of Apple Mountain
Music. Because of their location adjacent to Mitchell ES, they have
visited Mitchell to provide students in every classroom with hands-on experience
on a variety of folk instruments and have performed a concert at the school as
well. They have also worked with Chelwood ES and Cleveland MS where
Heirlooms member Shelly Andes is the Choral Director. At last year's All-State
Music Conference, several hammered dulcimer players provided accompaniment for
Andes' Honor Choir during their concert.
