The ARTS Center "Spotlight"
Among the many teachers who do an excellent job of integrating the
arts into their curriculum is P.J. Sedillo, 4th grade teacher at Atrisco Elementary
School. His unique style of teaching fine arts to his students has been to
incorporate the history of fine arts, including art, music, dance and drama, starting from
the prehistoric period and ending with the 20th century. The students progress from
three-dimensional art techniques to cubism, the Minute Waltz to current-day
hip-hop, the Gregorian Chant to the Baroque style of J.S. Bach. P.J. is a regular
patron of the ARTS Center. "Besides my own private collection," says P.J.,
"all of my materials come from the APS ARTS Center. The resource teachers are a
wealth of information, and if they don't have the answer, they will point you the
way."
P.J. also currently choreographs and coaches, with the
help of Debbie Martinez, the Atrisco Dance Troupe. This dance troupe, which consists
of 3rd, 4th and 5th grades, has received numerous awards, including 1st place state
champions in Jazz and pom-pom dance divisions.
Additionally, P.J. is active on the community arts
scene. He plays violin for the Albuquerque Philharmonic Orchestra, and sings and
dances with the Albuquerque Civic Light Opera, where he has been in productions of West
Side Story, Guys and Dolls, La Cage Aux Follies, Oklahoma, and 42nd St.
