Arthur Sussman, painter and philosopher, died Thursday, January 10th, 2008,
after a long illness, at the age of 80. Through the beauty of his art he will be
long remembered in the hearts of his many friends and collectors.
Pamela Michaelis,
co-founder of the Collector's Guide and host of Gallery News on KHFM radio gave
a moving tribute to Arthur on January 22nd, 2008. You can
read it here or listen to it here.
Sussman's biblical paintings are conceptually brilliant and intellectually accessible.
This same spirituality of Sussman's Old Testament paintings permeate his Western
Paintings, as depicted in his series, Blue Feather, an American Indian Chief. His
works are passionate, opening the heart; yet his subjects delight the eyes with elegant
detail. His paintings reveal him as a consummate story teller. Creating unique
compositions, Sussman presents his characters through a dream quality which changes focus
on the canvas.
"Sussman is a Major Painter of
religious matter. His work is almost surreal in the representation of ethereal
subjects."
- Ellen Landis, Curator of the
Albuquerque Museum of Fine Arts, in an article which appeared in the Albuquerque
Journal Westside - Nov.30, 2001
